This past week, as many of you know, our Congress passed a bill to give $700 billion to bail out mortgage lenders. The move was to stem the tide of impending economic troubles. While it is unclear how this bill will affect our economy or even how our economy will survive in the coming years, there is no doubt that the events of the past month should at least open the eyes of the American public.

The day is coming where jobs will not be so easy to come by. Actually, that day is probably closer than any of us think. Where as at one time in this nation one could get away with having a limited skill set and keep their position, the globalization of our world and the emergence of new technology makes this situation more and more unlikely.

Now, many of us could feel afraid of this situation, but in fact you should take it in strides. Keeping up with modern technology will also keep you more and more viable in the job market. The only problem is that there is a bit of work involved learning the ins and out of necessary technology.

For example, your superior knowledge of Microsoft Works does not mean that much in a world where nearly every office computer has been running the program for several years. No, the basic knowledge of basic technology will just not be enough anymore and like any other skill new technology takes time to learn.

There is no better time in your life to learn these necessary skills than in college. Here you will have the time and availability to master skills and learn from your peers. Obtaining a thorough knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite or figuring out how to use Cascading Style sheets, otherwise known as CSS, and HTML to build websites will make you more invaluable to your employer.

Here at UTM we have plenty of classes for those brave enough to take these subjects more seriously, but if you put the time in you will be more marketable when finding a job and help your chances of obtaining job security once you have found a position.

The current state of our economy and the troubles we are sure to face is going to make keeping your job that much harder. These skills, along with a well rounded education is the biggest step you can take in order to really make yourself a flexible employee, one which your superiors will find it difficult to disregard or replace.

Knowing technology, or having these skills might seem unnecessary, but believe me, they are more important than you think. In the remaining time you have here at UTM do not allow your time to go to waste. Find time to learn these necessary skills and you will enjoy the benefits later in the professional world.
