Children, elderly require special donations

As local groups gear up to gather food for We Care Ministries in Martin, director Betty Baker asks that easy-to-fix foods for children not be overlooked.
"Children are not able to use all the foods that are donated to We Care," Baker said. "Many children in the Weakley County area are latchkey kids; they come home to empty homes and have to prepare food for themselves. Many lower-income families work multiple jobs and work the late shifts, leaving their children to fend for themselves when it comes to finding food.
"That is why, besides the normal canned food that is donated, microwaveable meals are greatly appreciated and in short supply at We Care," she said.
She added that the same problem exists when serving the mentally impaired and the elderly.
"Some of the food donated is not easy for them to use. They can have a freezer full of food and nothing to eat, simply because they do not know how to cook it," Baker said.
Child-friendly foods are needed at We Care year round, she said, along with cereal, peanut butter, canned meat, spaghetti sauce, rice, noodles, juice and baby food. Children's blue jeans, children's shoes and children's coats are also always needed.
