The League of Striving Artists has an art exhibit currently on display on the second floor of the Paul Meek Library.

The show's main focus is the meaning of words. The artists were challenged with the idea of the Urban Dictionary- words exist that we do not yet know the meaning of because we have never seen them.

In this exhibit, the students took nonsensical words, came up with a definition and made their meanings come to life.

To see the meaning of words like "gondola", "serfo", and "myoting", check out the exhibit.

Students used different mediums for this project but first place winner, Zach Dickson who is a secondary art major, mainly used Microsoft Works to create his pieces in the exhibit.

Dickson said, "Although I love many mediums in art, I decided to explore my new found skills in graphic design to create my works of art."

These pieces are extremely detailed and deserve a long look to catch all the hidden pieces.

Dickson's favorite piece was the ‘Plain of Serfo'.

"This work of art, displays not only all the power of color a Greek god would possess but it also conveys my thoughts and beliefs of a world united with art and culture.  A world is what a person makes it, and it only takes one person to make it beautiful.  May that person be an artist," Dickson commented.

The League of Striving Artist is a name change for the organization formerly known as the Visual Art Society. LSA is the student arts organization on campus. This name change is a result of the campus-wide effort to phase out clubs and incorporate professional organizations.

This show is LSA's first additional show to the normal art department exhibits.

This show was volunteer not curriculum based. LSA members created the theme and put together these works on their own time out of coursework and studio time. Some art majors are required to complete six to eight hours of studio time a week.

Faculty adviser, Jason Stout feels the work presented in the show is very strong.

Stout returned as a professor in 2005 and this is his first year to serve as faculty adviser for LSA. Much of the work and preparation to make this show happen took place over winter break. For this reason, not as many members participated, but after seeing the success of the show many students wished they had.

LSA is comprised of a variety of art majors and passionate artist. There are five officers and roughly twenty active members. LSA wants to incorporate community involvement and continue hosting exhibits that are a volunteer basis facilitated by the organization.

If interested in participating in LSA the organization meets every Tuesday at 12:15 in Gooch hall room 120.

Feel free to bring your lunch   and find out more bout LSA.
