Dance Ensemble performs ‘A Night of Dance’ in celebration of Black History Month
Kelley Martin Staff Writer Pure talent graced the campus of UTM as the Black Student Association (BSA) presented "A Night of Dance" which featured the UTM Dance Ensemble. The event took place on February 9 in Watkins Auditorium and was filled with a supportive and cheerful crowd.

One year later: Goodyear’s presence still felt
Although February marks one year since the Union City Goodyear plant announced its close, some UTM students are still benefiting from their work as summer help. It has been one year since Goodyear's plant manager delivered the phone call that changed 1900 employees' lives when he announced that the Union City plant would be closing before the end of the year.

Delta Sigma Theta presents ‘I Had a Dream’
The Eta Xi chapter of Delta Sigma Theta launched the celebration of Black History Month on February 8 in Watkins Auditorium. Their play entitled, "I Had a Dream," was full of entertainment, historical facts and an appreciation for black history. A warm welcome was given by Soror Ivory Brown and was followed by a musical selection by the adorable and talented Martin Children's Choir.

‘The Freedman’s Trail of Tears’
The 12th annual Civil Rights Conference at UTM officially began Monday, Feb. 20. The night's events addressed the rights of American Indians. Many students do not think about the current oppression of today's Indians or that there are Indian national leaders continuing to fight for their rights.

Power outages plaguing Martin; UTM campus OK
A couple of weeks ago, there were two power outages that occurred days apart here in Weakley County, Tenn. Despite the entire county being without power, the UTM campus has its own back-up generators. The Weakley County Municipal Electric System gets its power from the TVA, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and the power generated is then delivered to residents of Weakley County.

Small quake shakes area residents
A 4.0 magnitude earthquake hit Southeast Missouri at 3:58 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, according to the U.S Geological Survey. USGS data showed the quake was located: • 8 km (5 miles) NNW (345°) from East Prairie, Mo. • 186 km (115 miles) W (281°) from Clarksville, Tenn.

Gearing for greener tomorrow
A little goes a long way. Only in its second year, Campus Conservation Nationals has big plans for making its "green school" army grow. Between Feb. 6 and April 23, over 150 colleges and universities across the country will be participating in the first nationwide electricity and water reduction competition.

Charmed win: WUTM takes 3rd straight during SEJC
Large-scale disaster drill also part of convention
WUTM, FM 90.3, "The Hawk," UTM's student-run radio station, proved Friday night, Feb. 10, that the third time was indeed the charm. The station won its third straight designation as Best College Radio Station during the 26th Southeast Journalism Conference convention, hosted this year – and for the first time – by UTM's student media and the Department of Communications.

Guarding the girls: Officer Charlie Jahr and women’s self defense classes
This is Officer Charlie Jahr's fourth semester of teaching the women's self defense class at UT Martin. Jahr, a Martin, Tenn. native, has worked for UT Martin public safety for five and a half years. Two years ago he was called and asked to teach a women's self defense class through HHP.

Group fitness classes active at Student Rec
At UTM's student recreational center, their goal is to encourage participation and educate students about the benefits of exercise. The center strives to come up with more inventive ways to help encourage the students to stay in shape. In the last year several group fitness classes have been added to the program and student participation has grown considerably.
