Social media should encourage intelligence, not ignorance

By Kalsey Stults

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but there are too many ignorant people on social media these days.  I don't mean to be blunt or to attack, but it's just frustrating to see.
It use to be, that people were more ashamed to say certain things for fear of a social lashing by their peers, but with social media these days, they feel encouraged with people re-tweeting or liking their statuses.

For example, during elections, (this is not going to get political: I swear) my Facebook was bombarded with pure and total ignorance.  I am not someone who tries to take away from you or your own opinion, but when your opinion states things in a derogatory way, such as racism, I get really frustrated.
What frustrated me the most, however, was that these horrible and incredibly ignorant remarks, invited other people to join along and say worse things, and for others to like them and remark "Amen."
I just don't understand.
I just don't get it.

Why do people feel the need to reward idiocy with more idiocy? No one stands up and says "You know, I don't agree with you and I feel disrespected for you saying such derogatory things" because you know exactly what will happen; they will get completely pummeled with angry comments.

And yet, those people who have actual insightful and intelligent things to say, are victimized and have people attack them, if it goes against what they think.   It's such a one-way street when you deal with ignorance. You can't argue with someone who is closed-minded.  They will never be able to see reason or see that someone else's opinions are valid.
Do the people who say such nasty things realize that this makes them look bad? That people are going to be judging them for the things that they post, just as they are judging other people?

Why can't people just have respect? What is so hard about keeping your own personal beliefs and thoughts to yourself? You can believe what you want, and I can believe what I want. That is the great thing about us each being different and unique. We each base our own thoughts and beliefs by our own experiences and no two people have had the same experiences.
So please, don't tell me what to believe or to expect me to agree with you.  Please, don't say things that could hurt other people's feelings. Please think before you post something that could ruin your own reputation.  Please, just please, don't be dumb: use social media wisely.
