Review: Everyone should watch 'National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation'
I am writing this article for the unfortunate few who have never seen National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.
Thus, I will give you good reasoning to stop what you're doing and go watch it.
"Christmas Vacation" is the movie that should be a tradition in all households. "A Christmas Story," "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," and "Home Alone" are top traditional Christmas movies. But in my twinkling Christmas eyes, "Christmas Vacation" is the one movie that everyone needs to see enough times to quote in casual conversation.
Just imagine a perfect family Christmas: No mishaps with the Christmas tree, no drama between in-laws and no crazy cousins rolling up in your driveway unannounced in an RV.Yet we all know, in reality, nothing goes according to those perfect plans.
In "Christmas Vacation," Clark Griswold is a family man that wants the perfect family Christmas. He does his best to complete all the traditional Christmas tasks, such as finding the lisp-worthy perfect "Gristhwold family Christmasth three" out in the middle of a forest.
Clark also works hard to have the best looking house in the neighborhood. He proceeds to cover his house with "two hundred and fifty strands of lights, one hundred individual bulbs per strand, for a grand total of 25,000 Italian twinkle lights."
But of course, things never turn out the way he wants them to without some little glitch. It is very similar to how we feel around the chaotic Christmas season.
Another reason to watch this film is for the memorable quotes. A quotable scene occurs when Clark and his family are on the front lawn celebrating the lighting of his house. Clark is hugging all of his family members, and before he realizes it, he is hugging his cousin Eddie. Clark looks confused and Eddie says, "I hope you didn't do this all on our account, Clark... you surprised we are here?" Clark responds to Eddie, "Surprised, Eddie? If I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet, I wouldn't be more surprised than I am right now."
The situations that Clark finds himself in are what makes the movie so funny. People love this movie, because they can either see themselves in the same situations or have been in them personally.
Every Thanksgiving, my family and I pop in the old school VHS of "Christmas Vacation." Not only have we seen it about a hundred times, but also we continue to watch it a hundred more times and enjoy every minute of it. My brother and I quote it at the dinner table before we even watch it, practicing our Clark Griswold voice and old Aunt Bethany who says the Pledge of Allegiance instead of the prayer at the dinner table.
Throughout the entire movie there are quirky scenes that will make you laugh. Most families can relate to the situations the Griswolds find themselves in. The movie is really a classic in my heart not only because I can quote the entirety of it, but also because it is a tradition within my family.
