The UTM Wind Ensemble and Concert Band performed Thursday night Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Ballroom at the Boling University Center.

They were led under the direction of UTM Director of Bands Dr. John Oelrich. The concert had a featured artist on the oboe and bassoon, who is an assistant professor at UTM as well, Dr. Douglas Owens. Owens holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Furman University, a Master of Music in Performance from the University of South Carolina and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance from the University of Georgia.

The UTM Concert Band began the night with several different pieces including "Chant and Jubilo" by Francis McBeth, "Prospect" by Pierre LaPlante, "Simple Gifts," which included 4 separate pieces, by Frank Ticheli, and "Overture for Winds," which was a 3-part work, by Charles Carter. Many of the pieces had upbeat rhythms to go along with their several different parts. The pieces that were performed during this portion of the concert were somewhat based on folk song.

"The concert band played very musically, especially for their first concert this year," Oelrich said.
After the Concert Band finished, there was a short intermission to set up for the Wind Ensemble.
In the fall, there was a concert titled "Something old, something new, something borrowed..." The Wind Ensemble completed the previous concert by adding "Something blue." The pieces of this section were based on the color blue: blue notes, titles involving blue, and blue meanings.

The Wind Ensemble performed much longer pieces of music and many students had solos in every piece that was played.
The Concert Band and Wind Ensemble have been working on the repertoire for four weeks. Oelrich said he was very proud of both ensembles' performances and the students' hard work in preparing for their programs.

Oelrich was very appreciative to the audience for coming to support the UTM students and their talents even in the nasty weather. The next recital hosted by the Music Department is set for March 2 and will be the UTM Pre-College Piano Competition at 8 p.m. in Watkins Auditorium at the Boling University Center.
