Player Profile: Becca Williams
For Becca Williams, the senior right fielder for the UTM skyhawk softball team, coming to Martin was a no-brainer.
Becca started playing softball from a young age and looked up to her older sister, Meghan, as a mentor and an idol. They were able to play together during Becca's freshman year at Siegal High School in her hometown of Murfreesboro, Tenn. After that year, Becca's sister came to UTM to play softball under Coach Canary. Most would think the sisters would never get to play on a team together again after that, but Becca and her sister did.
After a year at UTM, Meghan told Coach Canary that he needed to watch Becca play. Coach Canary took her advice, and attended a college exposure tournament, where he watched Becca play third base for her high school team and not long after that, offered her a scholarship to come to UTM and play alongside her sister, literally. Becca's first year at UTM she began playing right field, with her sister in center field next to her.
Becca has had many accomplishments in her time on the Skyhawk softball team, including many great hits, plays at crucial moments, as well as several great catches in the outfield. One that stands out to Becca is from the season opener last year against SIU Edwardsville. With two outs and bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh and a tie game, Becca knew that if she struck out, they would have to play extra innings.
"I was thinking, 'Oh my gosh if I don't get these in, we're going to have to play extra innings, it's a tie ballgame.' All of a sudden, I see this pitch and it looks like it's close to me but I think it is still going to be a strike, so I just turned and I braced for it and it hit me in the knee and we won the ball game," said Williams, of the play that Coach Canary has called the most heads up play he's ever seen.
While Becca loves playing softball and spends quite a bit of her time playing and practicing, that's not all she has accomplished during her time here at UTM. This fall, Becca ran for Homecoming Queen, something athletes at UTM don't usually do. However, Becca had a huge support system from her teammates, as well as the football team, and ended up placing first runner up to Katie Pigg of Zeta Tau Alpha.
"It wasn't nerve-wracking at all. I knew I had a really good chance, because I had the whole athletic department behind me. The football team, which was the biggest supporting group I could have asked for besides the softball team," Williams said about her experience of running for Homecoming Queen during the 2012 Homecoming Elections.
Along with making a difference on the field and around campus, Williams hopes to one day make a difference in the lives of small children. Williams is a Pre-K-3 Education major, and will student teach this coming fall.
"I hope to student teach at the new elementary school at home [this summer]," Williams said.
While Williams loves being home, she has a few places that she has gotten to go with the softball team that will always stick out in her mind. Every year the team spends ten days in Florida playing and going to the beach, which is one of Williams' favorite places to go. Her other favorite place that she has gotten to go with the team was to Tuscaloosa, when the team played Alabama in the tournament.
Williams said that, while she is a huge Alabama fan, she was not star-struck when they played them in Tuscaloosa last season because she knew that the Skyhawks had a real chance to beat them.
If there is anyone to thank for her love of softball, it would be her sister and her parents. Williams said that her parents are definitely her biggest fans and have always been there and supported her. Her dad even learned to pitch fastpitch softball so that he could help her practice and get better on the field.
With a support system like the one Becca Williams has, she is bound to have an excellent senior season with the UTM Skyhawks Softball team on the field, and an excellent road ahead of her off of the field whenever the game is over.
