Women’s basketball rallies to soar past Saint Louis

The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team used an 8-0 run in the first half to tie its game at Saint Louis University at 17-all and never looked back en route to a 70-55 victory.

The Skyhawk women are now 4-1 on the year and continue their five-game road trip with a stop at Indiana State on Wednesday, Nov. 30. The road trip concludes Sunday, Dec. 4 at Memphis.

Sophomore guards Jasmine Newsome (25) and Heather Butler (21) combined for 46 of the Skyhawks' 70 points against Saint Louis. Butler scored 19 points in the first half, while Newsome scored 22 points in the second half.

UTM sophomore Beth Hawn led the team with 13 rebounds, but the host Billikens still won the battle on the boards, 48-44.

Saint Louis jumped out to a 17-9 lead, but UTM went on an 8-0 run and tied the game when Butler hit a jumper with 8:08 to play in the first half. The game was tied at 20-all, but with 3:44 to play before the half Butler nailed another jumper to give the

Skyhawks a 22-20 lead and the advantage for the rest of the game.

UTM closed out the first half with a 10-0 run and led 30-20 at the break. While the score favored the Skyhawks, the two teams were even at 26-26 in the rebounding war.

With 8:07 to play in the game, sophomore Aubrey Reedy made a layup and gave the Skyhawks their biggest cushion of the game at 23 points, 58-35.

The Skyhawks outscored Saint Louis 11-4 off turnovers. The Skyhawks shot 40 percent from the field, while Saint Louis shot 29 percent.
